Jenny Haniver Sideshow

Jenny Haniver Sideshow
Authentic Jenny Haniver, known to some as a Sea Devil. Mythical half man/half-fish creatures have been part of ancient lore for centuries and have captured the imaginations of every coastal culture around the world.

Even turn-of-the century Europeans were tantalized by the possibility that mermaids really existed. Native islanders began to capitalize on the globally pervasive belief in aquatic humanoids by constructing these effigies of the deep.

These little "sea monsters" became popular South Seas souvenirs for tourists of yesteryear as well as a favorite circus sideshow staple. No one knows for sure where they got the name "Jenny Haniver" - some think it’s derived from "Anver's", the French name for Antwerp - a possible place of their origin in Anglo culture.
